Answer: In response to this question, it is important to understand that the body parts we have are not owned by us. They belong to Allah, the Exalted.
Since we do not own our bodies, we require permission from Allah to perform any actions involving them. If there is no evidence from the Quran or the Sunnah allowing a specific action related to the body, the default position is that it is not permissible unless there is clear evidence permitting it.
Allah, the Exalted, has explicitly prohibited causing harm to ourselves in the Quran. For example, Allah says:
"Do not kill yourselves, for verily Allah is most merciful to you." (Quran 4:29)
This verse clearly prohibits suicide, and by extension, it also prohibits cutting off or disconnecting any part of the body, as doing so would result in the "death" of that body part. This falls under the same prohibition.
Additionally, Allah says in the Quran:
"Do not throw yourselves into harm." (Quran 2:195)
This verse emphasizes that we are not allowed to harm ourselves in any way. Our bodies are an Amanah (trust) from Allah, and we are entrusted with their care. Allah says in the Quran:
"Indeed, We offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, but they declined to bear it and feared it. But man undertook it; indeed, he was unjust and ignorant." (Quran 33:72)
This highlights the responsibility we have to care for our bodies, as they are a trust from Allah and not something we own outright.
Scholarly Differences on Donating Body Parts:
The scholars have differed on the issue of donating body parts to another person. Some contemporary scholars have ruled that it is permissible, while others have ruled that it is not permissible. Based on my humble and limited knowledge, the stronger opinion—and the one I advise and convey to others—is that it is not permissible to donate or give away any part of your body. This view seems to be the most consistent with the principles of preserving the body as a trust from Allah.
Important Note:
This answer is a general response to the question. If you are facing a specific situation or considering donating a body part, it is crucial to consult a qualified scholar or person of knowledge who can review your particular circumstances and provide guidance tailored to your case. Knowledge ultimately belongs to Allah, the Exalted, and He knows best.
