A sister from India asks:
"Assalamu 'alaykum, Ustadh.
I suffer from intense envy and hatred towards certain people. I hate myself for having these feelings.
I make Du'a to Allah, asking Him to bless them and forgive them because of the feelings I have towards them. Yet, despite all of this, I still haven't been cured of this disease.
Please advise me so that I can move forward with my life without feeling miserable and committing such a serious sin every single day.
I don't want to destroy the good deeds I've worked so hard to earn because of this problem I'm struggling with.
Please help me, by Allah's permission."
The Sheikh's Answer
I ask Allah, Glorified and Exalted, to relieve you of what has afflicted you and what you are complaining of.
This is indeed a serious and dangerous disease, namely Hasad (envy).
However, as long as the situation is as you have described, that these feelings are overwhelming you, yet you are striving against yourself, making Du'a to Allah to bless those people and help them, and sincerely trying to rectify yourself in this regard, then you must continue turning to Allah in supplication.
Increase your Du'a to Allah, asking Him to protect you from this envy.
Remind yourself of its consequences, that it is a clear and serious sin, and that its dangers are great.
At the same time, do not occupy your mind excessively with thinking about these feelings.
Instead, occupy your time with reading the Qur'an.
If you have not memorised the Qur'an, then strive to memorise it. Dedicate yourself to memorisation and spend plenty of time studying the Tafseer of the Qur'an.
Likewise, devote yourself to reading and studying Aqeedah, Fiqh and Islamic rulings.
Do not leave yourself with too much free time. Keep yourself occupied with acts of obedience to Allah, Glorified and Exalted.
Be especially diligent in this.
Continue striving against yourself to rid your heart of these feelings, and seek relief through Du'a.
Make Du'a particularly during the times when supplications are answered, such as:
- During the last part of the night.
- At the end of Salah, before the Tasleem.
- When rain is falling.
- And at other times when Du'a is especially encouraged.
If you continue striving against yourself while taking these necessary steps, then I hope that, after all of this, there will be nothing further to trouble you.
I ask Allah, Glorified and Exalted, to grant you relief and recovery from this condition and to record rewards for you.
