YOU MAY BE HIDING BEHIND KNOWLEDGE

There is a strange way a student of knowledge can avoid dealing with what is wrong in his life:

By studying something more advanced.

You can spend an evening following a detailed discussion in Aqeedah or Fiqh, take pages of notes, look up what different scholars said... and still sleep through Fajr the next morning.

You may know the references for an issue people are debating online, while your mother is still hurt by the way you spoke to her yesterday.

Your father has advised you about the same behaviour more than once.

Money you borrowed months ago is still unpaid.

Your own finances may contain Riba that you already know you need to get out of.

Yet somehow, another advanced lesson feels easier to deal with than any of that.

Be careful. The problem is not advanced knowledge.

Study Aqeedah deeply. Learn Fiqh properly. Read the books of the scholars.

But knowledge can become another place to hide if you keep using what you do not yet know to avoid acting upon what is already completely clear.

Allah ﷻ says:

إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَّوْقُوتًا

“Indeed, Salah has been prescribed for the believers at appointed times.” (Surah an-Nisa' 4:103)

And Allah ﷻ says:

وَقَضَىٰ رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا إِيَّاهُ وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا

“Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him and treat your parents with excellence.” (Surah al-Isra' 17:23)

There are things in the Deen that genuinely require years of study. And there are things you already understand well enough.

You do not need another class to know that Fajr has to be prayed.

You do not need a research paper to know that you should apologise to your mother.

You already know that another person's money is not yours to keep.

And if you know that something in your income or dealings is Haram, learning more terminology does not make leaving it less urgent.

It is reported from Hasan al-Basri رحمه الله: “The believer combines good deeds with fear, while the hypocrite combines wrongdoing with a sense of security.” (Tafsir al-Tabari, Surah al-Mu'minun 23:60)

Student of knowledge, do not let the amount you know make it harder to see the obvious things you still need to fix. There is no contradiction between continuing your studies and dealing seriously with your own shortcomings.

Protect the Salah you keep missing. Go and repair what you damaged with your parents. Repay what you owe. Start getting yourself out of Riba.

Look at the character your family actually lives with, not the character people assume you have because they hear you speak about Islam.

Then keep studying. But let the knowledge reach somewhere beyond your notes.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “The Qur’an is a proof for you or against you.” (Sahih Muslim 223)

That is a frightening thought for anyone who studies the religion.

The question is not only how much you have learnt. It is what all of that knowledge has done to you.

If years of study have made your vocabulary more advanced but Fajr is still neglected, debts are still unpaid and the people closest to you are still suffering from your character, perhaps those things deserve your attention before the next complicated discussion.

Sometimes you genuinely need to learn more.

And sometimes you already know exactly what Allah requires from you.

You just need to do it.
