The Halal Income Struggle: Career Paths that Align with Islamic Principles

A job offer can look perfect on paper. The salary is respectable, the company is established and the role promises experience and progression. Yet a Muslim may still hesitate.

What does the company actually sell?

What will I personally be required to do?

Will I be processing Riba, promoting something prohibited or deceiving customers?

If the job itself is lawful, could dishonesty make part of my salary unlawful?

Is the income enough to support a family, or does the figure only appear comfortable because most comparisons assume two earners?

These questions matter because income does not remain as a number in a bank account. It becomes food, clothing, housing, education, charity and provision for those who depend upon us. Islam therefore examines more than the amount earned. It examines what the worker gave in exchange for it and whether that exchange was lawful.

The solution is not to reduce all halal work to a small list of religious professions. Nor should every modern career be treated with suspicion. Software development, engineering, healthcare, teaching, repair work and online services are permissible in origin. The ruling changes when a prohibited product, service, method or consequence enters the work.

The basic rule regarding ordinary worldly practices is that nothing is prohibited except what Allah ﷻ has prohibited. [Majmu al-Fatawa by Ibn Taymiyyah (4/196)]

The word العادات includes the ordinary worldly activities through which people organise their lives, meet their needs and deal with one another. A profession is therefore not haram merely because it is modern or was unknown to earlier generations. A reason must be identified for prohibiting it.

Four Ways a Job or Its Income May Become Unlawful

1. The worker is paid for something prohibited

The clearest case is when the paid activity itself is prohibited. This includes selling intoxicants, operating gambling services, producing pornography, practising fortune-telling, processing Riba contracts, providing false testimony or manufacturing something intended specifically for a prohibited purpose.

  • The Prophet ﷺ said:
When Allah ﷻ prohibits something, He also prohibits its price. [Sunan al-Daraqutni 2815]

The prohibition does not end with personal consumption. A person cannot avoid drinking alcohol while making his living from selling it. He cannot avoid gambling personally while building the system through which others gamble. He cannot claim that he does not consume Riba while being employed specifically to prepare or formally record its contracts.

The payment is unlawful because it was exchanged for the prohibited activity itself.

2. A neutral skill is deliberately used to facilitate sin

A person may not carry out the final prohibited act but may still provide the service that allows it to happen.

  • Allah ﷻ says:
Do not cooperate in sin and transgression. [Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:2]
  • In a hadith narrated by Jabir:
لَعَنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ آكِلَ الرِّبَا، وَمُؤْكِلَهُ، وَكَاتِبَهُ، وَشَاهِدَيْهِ، وَقَالَ: هُمْ سَوَاءٌ
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed the one who consumes Riba, the one who pays it, the one who records it and its two witnesses. He said: They are all equal. [Sahih Muslim 1598]

The writer and witnesses did not necessarily receive the interest. They were included because their participation enabled and completed the transaction.

That is, they are equal in deserving the curse because they cooperated in carrying it out. [Fatawa Nur ala al-Darb by al-Uthaymin (16/2)]

This principle must not be expanded until every remote connection becomes unlawful. There is a difference between:

  1. Designing software specifically to calculate and process interest.
  2. Selling an ordinary computer to someone who happens to work for a bank.
  3. Advertising an interest-bearing loan.
  4. Providing electricity to a building containing different businesses.
  5. Transporting alcohol under a delivery contract.
  6. Providing ordinary public transport to a passenger who may later commit a sin.

The first, third and fifth examples directly serve the prohibited activity. The other services have independent lawful uses and are not being supplied for the purpose of committing the sin.

The decisive questions are:

  • What use is intended?
  • What does the worker know?
  • How directly does the work enable the prohibited act?
  • Does the service have a normal lawful use independent of that act?

A programmer, designer, accountant or driver may therefore receive different rulings according to the project being performed.

3. The profession is lawful, but the worker has not earned part of the wage

A person may enter a permissible profession yet take money he did not properly earn.

  • Allah ﷻ says:
O believers, do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly, but only through trade conducted by mutual consent. [Surah An-Nisa 4:29]

The employer’s consent to pay is connected to the work, time, availability or result promised by the employee. When the employee secretly withholds part of that exchange, the employer has not genuinely agreed to pay for what was missing.

  • Sheikh Ibn Baz رحمه الله said:
لَا رَيْبَ أَنَّ الْوَاجِبَ عَلَى الْعَامِلِ أَنْ يُؤَدِّيَ الْعَمَلَ بِأَمَانَةٍ، الْعَامِلُ أَخَذَ الْأُجْرَةَ فِي مُقَابِلِ عَمَلِهِ... وَأَنْ يَحْفَظَ الْوَقْتَ الَّذِي تَمَّتِ الْإِجَارَةُ عَلَى الْعَمَلِ فِيهِ
There is no doubt that the worker must perform his work faithfully. The worker received the wage in return for his work... and he must preserve the time during which he was hired to work. [Fatwa al-Wajib ala al-Muwazzaf Tijah Wazifatihi lil-Shaykh Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz (2265)]

Examples include:

  • Falsifying attendance or overtime.
  • Regularly leaving early without permission.
  • Recording tasks that were never completed.
  • Charging a client for work that was not provided.
  • Making false expense claims.
  • Refusing assigned duties while continuing to claim full payment.
  • Taking unauthorised commissions.
  • Secretly outsourcing work where personal performance was required.
  • Presenting copied or automatically generated work as evidence of personal competence.

Time-based and result-based employment must be distinguished.

A worker employed for fixed hours must generally provide those hours and remain available, even if no task occupies every minute.

You are bound by a period of time, not merely by the amount of work. You were told that this salary is for attending from one time until another, whether work is available or no work is available. [Liqa al-Bab al-Maftuh li-Ibn Uthaymin (9/14)]

A freelancer hired for an agreed result must provide that result at the promised standard.

Authorised breaks, approved leave, flexible hours and permitted delegation do not fall under the same ruling as secretly withholding what was promised.

Using AI, templates or subcontractors is also not automatically dishonest. It becomes deceptive when personal performance was required, disclosure was expected, confidential material was passed to an unauthorised system or another person’s work was falsely represented as one’s own.

4. A separate sin occurs at work without becoming the paid service

A worker may perform a lawful service fully while committing a separate sin during the working day.

A person may backbite a colleague, look at something prohibited, listen to prohibited material, dress improperly or delay Salah beyond its prescribed time without a valid reason. These sins require repentance. They may also make the workplace spiritually harmful. However, they do not automatically mean that the employer failed to receive the lawful service for which the salary was paid.

  • Sheikh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen رحمه الله said:
A worker may work for a man who earns money through a prohibited means. If the worker properly fulfils his own work, there is no sin upon him, unless his work assists that man in the prohibited activity, in which case it is not permissible. [Liqa al-Bab al-Maftuh li-Ibn Uthaymin (145/19)]

The distinction disappears when the sin becomes part of the paid duty.

A designer paid to produce prohibited images, a marketer promoting Riba, an employee serving alcohol, and a salesperson instructed to deceive customers are not merely committing unrelated workplace sins. The prohibited conduct has entered the service for which they are being paid.

A separate sin may also affect the wage when it consumes paid time, lowers the promised quality, misuses company property, or prevents the employee from fulfilling the contract.

These four categories prevent two common errors. The first is declaring an entire salary haram merely because a separate sin occurred at work. The second is treating direct participation in a prohibited service as though it were only a private sin with no effect upon the income.

Why the Source of Income Matters

Halal income is not merely a technical matter involving contracts. The Quran and Sunnah connect lawful nourishment to worship, du‘a, charity, barakah and accountability before Allah ﷻ.

  • Allah ﷻ said to the Messengers:
يَا أَيُّهَا الرُّسُلُ كُلُوا مِنَ الطَّيِّبَاتِ وَاعْمَلُوا صَالِحًا
O Messengers, eat from the good and pure things and perform righteous deeds. [Surah Al-Mu'minun 23:51]
  • Allah ﷻ similarly said to the believers:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُلُوا مِنْ طَيِّبَاتِ مَا رَزَقْنَاكُمْ وَاشْكُرُوا لِلَّهِ
O believers, eat from the good things We have provided for you and give thanks to Allah. [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:172]
  • The Prophet ﷺ brought the two commands together:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ طَيِّبٌ لَا يَقْبَلُ إِلَّا طَيِّبًا، وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ أَمَرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ بِمَا أَمَرَ بِهِ الْمُرْسَلِينَ
Allah ﷻ is Pure and accepts only what is pure. Allah ﷻ has commanded the believers with what He commanded the Messengers. [Sahih Muslim 1015]
  • He ﷺ then described a traveller who raised his hands and repeatedly called upon Allah ﷻ:
He then mentioned a man who travels for a long time, dishevelled and dusty, raising his hands towards the sky and saying: My Lord, my Lord. Yet his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, his clothing is unlawful and he has been nourished through the unlawful. How, then, can he be answered? [Sahih Muslim 1015]

The man possessed several recognised causes for the acceptance of du‘a. He was travelling, humbled, dishevelled and raising his hands. Yet unlawful nourishment remained a serious barrier.

This does not mean that every act of worship performed by someone with unlawful earnings is automatically invalid. Each act of worship has its own conditions. The hadith establishes the serious spiritual consequences of being nourished through what is unlawful.

Lawful income affects charity.

  • The Prophet ﷺ said:
Whoever gives in charity the equivalent of a date from lawful earnings, and nothing ascends to Allah ﷻ except what is pure, Allah ﷻ accepts it with His Right Hand. [Sahih al-Bukhari 7430]

A person cannot knowingly acquire money through theft, Riba, bribery or a prohibited service and then purify the method by donating part of the proceeds. A good destination does not transform an unlawful source into a lawful one.

This must be distinguished from a repentant person removing unlawful wealth from his possession because the Shari‘ah requires him to do so. That removal is not ordinary voluntary charity from his own lawful property.

Halal income is connected to Barakah.

  • Allah ﷻ says:
Allah ﷻ destroys Riba and causes charities to grow. [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:276]
  • Sheikh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen رحمه الله explained the destruction of Riba as:
قوله تعالى: يمحق الله الربا؛ المحق بمعنى الإزالة؛ أي يزيل الربا؛ والإزالة يحتمل أن تكون إزالة حسية، أو إزالة معنوية، فالإزالة الحسية: أن يسلط الله على مال المرابي ما يتلفه؛ والمعنوية: أن يَنزع منه البركة.
Concerning His statement, Allah ﷻ destroys Riba; al-Mahq means removal; that is, He removes Riba. This removal may be physical or non-physical. Physical removal is that Allah ﷻ causes something to befall the wealth of the person who deals in Riba and destroys it. Non-physical removal is that He removes its blessing. [Tafsir al-Uthaymin: al-Fatihah wa al-Baqarah li-Ibn Uthaymin (3/378)]

A dishonest transaction may still produce visible profit. The amount may remain in the account while its blessing and true benefit are removed.

  • The Prophet ﷺ said regarding buyers and sellers:
فَإِنْ صَدَقَا وَبَيَّنَا بُورِكَ لَهُمَا فِي بَيْعِهِمَا، وَإِنْ كَتَمَا وَكَذَبَا مُحِقَتْ بَرَكَةُ بَيْعِهِمَا
If they are truthful and disclose matters clearly, their transaction is blessed. If they conceal matters and lie, the blessing of their transaction is erased. [Sahih al-Bukhari 2079]

We should not look at every illness, bill or business loss and confidently declare it a punishment for haram income. Such a judgement requires knowledge we do not possess. The general principle is enough: salary and profit alone do not measure financial success.

Finally, a person will be questioned about both the source and use of wealth.

  • The Prophet ﷺ said:
A servant’s feet will not move on the Day of Resurrection until he is questioned about his life and how he spent it, his knowledge and what he did with it, his wealth, where he earned it and how he spent it, and his body and how he wore it out. [Jami al-Tirmidhi 2417]

Supporting one’s family, giving charity and helping one’s parents are praiseworthy. They do not remove the separate question of how the money entered a person’s possession.

Your Provision Is Written, but You Must Seek It Properly

Fear of poverty often makes prohibited income appear necessary.

A person may think that leaving a questionable role will destroy his career, reduce his family’s standard of living or allow others to move ahead of him.

  • The Prophet ﷺ said:
Do not consider provision slow in coming. No servant will die until he has received the final portion of provision assigned to him. Therefore, seek provision properly by taking what is halal and leaving what is haram. [Al-Mustadrak ala al-Sahihayn lil-Hakim 2134]

Belief in written provision does not mean abandoning work. The hadith commands the Muslim to seek provision, but to seek it properly.

  • Allah ﷻ says:
Whoever fears Allah ﷻ, He will make a way out for him and provide for him from where he does not expect. [Surah at-Talaq 65:2–3]

This is not a promise that everyone who leaves a prohibited role will receive a higher salary the following week. The transition may involve retraining, reduced spending, relocation or temporary hardship. The verse gives hope without promising a life free from tests.

Financial Responsibility in the Muslim Family

The modern term breadwinner is less precise than the Islamic concept of النَّفَقَة, financial maintenance.

A husband is ordinarily responsible for providing his wife and dependent children with reasonable food, clothing, housing and other recognised needs according to his genuine ability and the family’s circumstances.

  • Allah ﷻ says:
Men are maintainers of women because Allah ﷻ has favoured some of them over others and because they spend from their wealth. [Surah An-Nisa 4:34]

Qiwāmah is a responsibility accompanied by accountability. It is not permission for oppression, nor does it mean that every man possesses authority over every woman.

The husband’s duty to provide does not mean that a woman is forbidden from earning or owning money. A competent adult woman has independent financial ownership.

  • Sheikh Ibn Baz رحمه الله said:
هَذَا مَالُهَا، إِنْ كَانَتْ رَشِيدَةً تَتَصَرَّفُ فِيهِ... فَلَهَا التَّصَرُّفُ فِي مَالِهَا فِي الْبَيْعِ وَالشِّرَاءِ وَالْعِتْقِ وَالْعَطَاءِ
It is her property. If she is financially competent, she may dispose of it. She may use her wealth in selling, purchasing, freeing slaves and giving gifts. [Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari lil-Shaykh Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz, al-Dars 86]

Her salary does not automatically become her husband’s property. She may contribute voluntarily and be rewarded for doing so, but his original financial duty is not automatically transferred to her because she earns.

Does a married woman require her husband’s permission to work?

Islam does not prohibit women from working or trading.

  • Sheikh Ibn Baz رحمه الله said:
Islam does not prohibit a woman from working or trading. Allah ﷻ has prescribed work for His servants and commanded them to undertake it. He said: Say: Work, for Allah ﷻ will see your work, and so will His Messenger and the believers. He also said: So that He may test you as to which of you is best in deed. This applies to everyone, men and women, and trade has been legislated for everyone. [Fatwa Hukm Amal al-Marah lil-Shaykh Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz, 20079]

However, according to the position adopted by Sheikh Ibn Baz رحمه الله, a married woman requires her husband’s permission to work outside the home.

  • He stated:
If she has a husband, the husband’s permission is required. [Fatwa Hukm Amal al-Marah Kharij al-Bayt lil-Shaykh Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz, Raqm 11965]

This concerns leaving the marital home, the husband’s established rights and the organisation of the family. It does not give him ownership of her income.

A valid condition accepted at the time of marriage must also be considered.

  • Sheikh Ibn Baz رحمه الله said:
إِنْ كَانَتْ دَخَلَتْ عَلَى شَرْطٍ بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَهُ أَنَّهُ يَسْمَحُ لَهَا بِالتَّدْرِيسِ، وَمَعَاشُهَا لَهَا... فَالْمُسْلِمُونَ عَلَى شُرُوطِهِمْ
If the marriage was entered with the condition that he would permit her to teach and that her salary would remain hers... then Muslims must fulfil their conditions. [Fatwa Hukm Infaq al-Zawj ala Imraatihi al-Muwazzafah lil-Shaykh Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz, 2174]

Such a condition does not make prohibited work permissible. It matters when the work and environment are otherwise lawful.

There are also circumstances in which earning may become necessary for a woman.

  • Sheikh Ibn Baz رحمه الله stated regarding a woman with no wealth and nobody supporting her:
بَلْ يَجِبُ عَلَيْهَا أَنْ تَعْمَلَ مَا يُعَيِّشُهَا وَيَحْفَظُ عَلَيْهَا حَيَاتَهَا إِذَا كَانَ مَا عِنْدَهَا مَالٌ، وَلَا عِنْدَهَا مَنْ يُنْفِقُ عَلَيْهَا
She must work in a manner that sustains her and preserves her life if she has no wealth and no one to maintain her. [Fatwa Hukm Amal al-Marah Kharij Baytiha lil-Shaykh Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz, Raqm 5631]

The accurate conclusion is not that women may never work, nor that marriage has no effect upon the decision. A married woman’s employment must account for the work itself, the environment, her husband’s permission according to this position, any valid marital condition and the rights of the family. Her earnings nevertheless remain her property.

Why an Average Salary May Not Support a Single-Income Family

Salary discussions often describe the income of one worker. They do not automatically tell a husband whether that salary can support a spouse and children.

An average salary may be manageable for:

  • A single adult.
  • A young employee sharing accommodation.
  • Someone receiving support from parents.
  • One spouse in a dual-income household.
  • A worker whose employer provides housing, healthcare or transport.

The same salary may be inadequate when one person must pay for the housing, food, clothing, transport, healthcare and education of an entire family.

A minimum wage, an average individual wage and a family living wage are not the same thing.

A dual-income household may make an ordinary salary appear more adequate because two wages contribute towards shared expenses. However, the second wage should not be counted at its gross value without deducting childcare, transport, taxes, work expenses and any household services that must now be purchased.

The correct question is not merely:

Does this career pay an average salary?

It is:

After deductions, can one income meet the actual needs of the household while allowing for emergencies and periods without work?

A sole earner should prepare a realistic family budget and compare it with the median salary of the occupation in the country and city where he intends to live.

A lawful and respectable occupation may still be unsuitable as the only income for a large family in an expensive city. This does not make the occupation inferior. It may mean that the worker needs additional experience, specialisation, a lower-cost location or a second lawful source of income.

Career Paths Worth Exploring

There is no honest single global salary for most professions. The same job title may involve very different duties, costs and living standards across countries.

The salary figures below therefore use the United States as a clearly identified national example rather than presenting unsupported worldwide ranges. Unless otherwise stated, they are May 2024 national median wages published by the United States Bureau of Labour Statistics through the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics programme and the Occupational Outlook Handbook.

A median wage is the point at which half of the workers in the occupation earn more and half earn less. It is not an entry-level salary, a guaranteed salary or a family living wage. These are gross wage figures before tax and should not be treated as an indication of what a worker will retain after housing, healthcare, transport, childcare and other expenses.

Readers outside the United States should consult the official labour statistics agency of the country in which they intend to work and compare local occupational pay with taxation, benefits, licensing requirements and the actual cost of supporting their household.

1. Skilled Trades and Repair

Main Islamic concerns:

  • Neglecting patients.
  • Falsifying care records.
  • Fraudulent billing.
  • Disclosing confidential information.
  • Practising beyond one’s competence.
  • Accepting incentives that compromise patient care.
  • Particular procedures involving abortion, fertility, prohibited substances or end-of-life decisions that require individual rulings.
  • Unnecessary seclusion or physical contact where a suitable alternative is reasonably available.

3. Teaching, Tutoring, Translation and Editing

Jobs: Schoolteacher, online tutor, Qur’an teacher, Arabic teacher, translator, editor, proofreader and instructional designer.

Salary outlook: In the United States, educational instruction and library occupations had a median annual wage of USD 59,220 in May 2024. Main Islamic concerns:

  • Completing assessed work for students.
  • Writing dissertations for dishonest submission.
  • Falsifying marks or attendance.
  • Distorting translations.
  • Plagiarism.
  • Teaching beyond one’s knowledge.
  • Teaching Islam without sound learning from qualified people.

4. Technology, Software, Data and AI Work

Jobs: IT support, web development, software engineering, cybersecurity, data analysis, AI training, data annotation and model evaluation.

Salary outlook: In the United States, computer and information-technology occupations had a median annual wage of USD 105,990 in May 2024. Computer support specialists had a median of USD 61,550. These figures describe established salaried occupations and should not be applied to basic data annotation, short-term AI tasks or irregular platform work.

Salary source: United States Bureau of Labour Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook and Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024.

  • Gambling platforms.
  • Riba-processing systems.
  • Pornographic services.
  • Malware and malicious hacking.
  • Unauthorised surveillance.
  • Identity theft.
  • Selling personal data.
  • Training systems specifically for fraud or prohibited activity.
  • Using stolen or unlawfully collected datasets.
  • Creating false reviews, evidence or identities.
  • Uploading confidential client material into unauthorised AI systems.
  • Using AI where independent human judgement was required.
  • Misrepresenting expertise.
  • Allowing another person to work through one’s account.

Remote work does not automatically make a project halal. The product, data and intended use must still be examined.

5. Engineering, Construction, Utilities and Infrastructure

Jobs: Engineering technician, civil engineer, electrical engineer, architect, quantity surveyor, site supervisor, safety officer, renewable-energy technician and water-treatment operator.

Salary outlook: In the United States, architecture and engineering occupations had a median annual wage of USD 97,310 in May 2024, while construction and extraction occupations had a median of USD 58,360. Architects had a median of USD 96,690. Technician, construction and utility roles should therefore not be assigned the salary expectations of registered professional engineers or architects.

Salary source: United States Bureau of Labour Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook and Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024.

General route: Technical diplomas for many technician roles. Accredited degrees, supervised experience and registration for professional engineering and architecture.

Best suited to: Those strong in mathematics, technical subjects and careful planning. It may offer good long-term progression for a sole earner after registration and experience.

Main Islamic concerns:

  • Bribery and procurement kickbacks.
  • Substituting inferior materials.
  • Falsifying inspections.
  • Hiding structural defects.
  • Signing work that was not reviewed.
  • Misusing client or public funds.
  • Concealing contamination.
  • Designing premises whose central purpose is prohibited.
  • Allowing cost or deadline pressure to override public safety.

6. Administration, Accounting and Business Operations

Jobs: Administrative assistant, customer-service worker, bookkeeper, accountant, payroll officer, recruiter, compliance analyst and project coordinator.

Salary outlook: In the United States, office and administrative-support occupations had a median annual wage of USD 46,320 in May 2024. Business and financial occupations had a median of USD 80,920, while accountants and auditors had a median of USD 81,680. The field therefore contains a substantial difference between basic administrative support and qualified financial, compliance and analytical work.

Salary source: United States Bureau of Labour Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook and Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024.

General route: Secondary education or diplomas for basic office work. Professional qualifications and registration for protected accounting and audit roles.

Best suited to: Organised workers, school leavers seeking office experience, people with unrelated degrees and single mothers seeking remote administration or bookkeeping.

Main Islamic concerns:

  • Recording or processing Riba contracts.
  • Selling conventional interest-bearing products.
  • Manipulating accounts.
  • Concealing fraud.
  • False tax documents.
  • Deceptive sales scripts.
  • Unauthorised commissions.
  • Misusing customer information.
  • Withholding wages unlawfully.

The existence of one unlawful transaction somewhere in a large company does not automatically make every administrative role haram. The employee must examine whether his own duties record, promote, approve or complete it.

7. Writing, Design, Marketing and Media

Jobs: Writer, editor, graphic designer, video editor, web designer, social-media manager and digital marketer.

Salary outlook: In the United States, arts and design occupations had a median annual wage of USD 53,180 in May 2024. Media and communication workers had a median of USD 70,300, while media and communication equipment workers had a median of USD 56,480. Freelancers may earn less or more depending upon their specialisation, clients, workload, unpaid administrative time and business expenses.

Salary source: United States Bureau of Labour Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook and Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024.

General route: A genuine portfolio, strong communication skills and competence with the relevant tools. A degree may help but is not always required.

Best suited to: Students, career changers, single mothers seeking flexible remote work and people without a directly related degree.

Main Islamic concerns:

  • Promoting Riba, gambling, alcohol or sexualised content.
  • Creating prohibited images.
  • Fake testimonials.
  • Hidden sponsorship.
  • False medical or financial claims.
  • Buying false followers or engagement.
  • Stealing photographs, music, fonts or written work.
  • Using pirated software.
  • Accepting prohibited clients because they pay more.
  • Presenting unchecked AI output as careful professional work.

8. Retail, Food Service, Warehousing and Delivery

Jobs: Retail assistant, cashier, cook, baker, warehouse worker, cleaner, delivery driver and customer-service worker.

Salary outlook: In the United States, food-preparation and serving occupations had a median annual wage of USD 34,130 in May 2024. Transportation and material-moving occupations had a median of USD 42,740, while sales and related occupations had a median of USD 37,460. These group figures do not guarantee full-time hours, and particular retail, warehouse and driving roles may differ substantially.

Salary source: United States Bureau of Labour Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook and Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024.

General route: Secondary education, on-the-job training and any required driving, food-handling or equipment certification.

  • Knowingly transporting prohibited products.
  • Stealing stock or cash.
  • Giving unauthorised discounts.
  • Falsifying attendance.
  • Hiding expired or damaged products.
  • Deceiving customers to meet targets.
  • Misusing customer information.

An entry-level wage in this field may provide useful personal income, but it is often insufficient as the sole income for a spouse and children in a high-cost area.

9. Agriculture, Food Production and Environmental Work

Jobs: Farmer, farm worker, food-production worker, food technologist, environmental technician and recycling worker.

Salary outlook: In the United States, farming, fishing and forestry occupations had a median annual wage of USD 36,750 in May 2024, while agricultural workers had a median of USD 35,980. Agricultural and food science technicians had a median of USD 48,480, and agricultural and food scientists had a median of USD 78,770. Basic farm work, technical work and professional scientific work should therefore not be placed under one salary range. As with other OEWS figures, these medians do not include self-employed farmers and do not represent every form of agricultural employment.

Salary source: United States Bureau of Labour Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook and Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024.

General route: Practical experience or vocational training for basic roles. Diplomas or degrees for food science, agronomy and environmental professions.

Best suited to: Rural communities, families with access to land, practical outdoor workers and those interested in food security.

Licensed clinical professionals may earn more, but they also require additional education, supervised training and licensing.

Salary source: United States Bureau of Labour Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook and Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024.

General route: Diplomas or degrees for support roles, with postgraduate training and professional licensing for many clinical positions.

Best suited to: Patient listeners, those interested in strengthening families and people able to handle emotionally demanding situations.

Main Islamic concerns:

  • Practising outside one’s competence.
  • Breaching confidentiality.
  • Concealing abuse.
  • Forming unhealthy emotional relationships with clients.
  • Giving religious verdicts without knowledge.
  • Allowing personal ideology to override professional honesty.
  • Supporting clearly prohibited actions without a recognised necessity.

11. Self-Employment and Home-Based Work

Jobs: Tutoring, translation, editing, virtual assistance, bookkeeping, baking, tailoring, childcare, cleaning, design, programming, repair work and lawful e-commerce.

Salary outlook: There is no reliable general salary for self-employment. The United States Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics programme does not include self-employed workers, owners and partners in unincorporated firms, household workers or unpaid family workers. A new business may earn nothing or make a loss, while an established specialist may exceed salaried employment.

Salary source: United States Bureau of Labour Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics programme.

Revenue must not be confused with personal income. Materials, platform fees, refunds, tax, equipment and periods without clients must be deducted.

General route: A genuine marketable skill, any legally required licence, basic bookkeeping and evidence of previous work.

Best suited to: Single mothers, students, parents caring for children, people with disabilities and those who require greater control over clients and working hours.

Main Islamic concerns:

  • Selling prohibited products or services.
  • Selling what one does not own or have authority to sell, except through a valid Sharīʿah-compliant arrangement such as agency or salam.
  • False descriptions.
  • Fake reviews.
  • Concealed defects.
  • Taking deposits without delivering.
  • Copyright theft.
  • Counterfeit goods.
  • Interest-based financing.
  • Unfair refund terms.
  • Operating without required registration.
  • Pyramid schemes or recruitment structures in which the real income comes from joining fees rather than genuine products.

Independent work may offer more control over clients and the environment. It also leaves the worker with fewer excuses when he personally chooses deception.

12. Jobs for Students

Students often need income that can fit around classes and examinations.

Practical options include:

  • Private tutoring.
  • Translation and proofreading.
  • Graphic design and video editing.
  • Junior IT support.
  • Data annotation and AI evaluation.
  • Retail involving lawful products.
  • Warehousing.
  • Administration.
  • Virtual assistance.
  • Delivery work where properly licensed.
  • Apprenticeships and vocational placements.

Students should avoid:

  • Writing another person’s assignment or dissertation.
  • Creating fake reviews.
  • Renting out bank accounts.
  • Receiving and forwarding unexplained money.
  • Allowing someone else to use their identity.
  • Reshipping suspicious parcels.
  • Opening financial or online accounts for strangers.

Part-time work must not become an excuse to neglect Salah, academic responsibilities or the working hours for which the student is being paid.

13. Jobs for Single Mothers

A single mother may require income alongside control over childcare, transport and emergencies.

Suitable options may include:

  • Online tutoring.
  • Translation, editing and proofreading.
  • Remote administration.
  • Bookkeeping.
  • AI evaluation or data annotation.
  • Graphic design.
  • Software and website work.
  • Home baking or catering.
  • Tailoring.
  • Registered home childcare.
  • Virtual assistance.
  • Lawful e-commerce.
  • Part-time healthcare or care work with suitable shifts.

Salaried remote work usually offers greater stability than irregular freelancing. Freelancing may offer more control, but it requires clear contracts, several reliable clients and savings for periods without work.

A single mother should calculate whether the income remains worthwhile after childcare, transport, taxes and business expenses. She should also examine whether the employer offers genuine flexibility during emergencies.

She should be cautious of:

  • Pyramid schemes.
  • Paid recruitment programmes.
  • Expensive business opportunities.
  • Suspicious reshipping work.
  • Offers requiring access to her bank account.
  • Platforms that promise easy income but provide no clear product or service.

The objective is not merely to find something that can be done from home. The product, client, contract and method of earning must all remain lawful.

Workplace Mixing and the Salary

This issue requires care because two questions are sometimes combined:

Is the workplace environment permissible?

Does the salary for an independently lawful service become unlawful because of that environment?

  • Sheikh Ibn Baz رحمه الله distinguished between separate work areas and continuous side-by-side work:
إِذَا كَانَتْ فِي مَحَلٍّ بَعِيدٍ عَنْهُمْ، مَا فِيهِ اخْتِلَاطٌ بِالرَّجُلِ، النِّسَاءُ فِي جِهَةٍ وَالرِّجَالُ فِي جِهَةٍ... أَمَّا تَعْمَلُ مَعَهُ جَنْبًا إِلَى جَنْبٍ... لَا يَجُوزُ
If she is in a place separate from them, without mixing with men, with the women in one section and the men in another, (there is no problem). But for her to work beside an unrelated man is not permissible. [Fatwa Hukm Amal al-Marah fi Makan fihi Ikhtilat lil-Shaykh Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz, 11168]

The cited contemporary rulings do not give one identical answer concerning the salary.

  • The Permanent Committee stated regarding a male accountant in an improper mixed environment:
أَمَّا مُرَتَّبُهُ وَمُكَافَأَتُهُ عَلَى عَمَلِهِ فَهُمَا حَلَالٌ لَهُ إِذَا كَانَ نَفْسُ الْعَمَلِ الَّذِي يَقُومُ بِهِ حَلَالًا
As for his salary and compensation for his work, they are halal if the work he actually performs is itself halal. [Fatawa al-Lajnah al-Daimah - al-Majmuah al-Ula 15/158]
  • Sheikh al-Albani رحمه الله gave a stricter answer in the particular case of a woman earning in a mixed workplace:
لَا، كِلَاهُمَا كِلَاهُمَا؛ أَيْ: آثِمَةٌ وَالْكَسْبُ حَرَامٌ
No, both apply: she is sinful, and the earnings are haram. [Fatawa Abr al-Hatif wa al-Sayyarah lil-Albani, al-Sharit 246]

The cases and legal approaches are not identical. It is therefore inaccurate to claim that all scholars gave one uniform ruling regarding the salary.

The worker should describe the actual environment, duties, level of interaction and any genuine need when seeking an individual ruling.

Even according to the view that payment for an independently lawful task remains halal, the ruling changes when organising or promoting prohibited mixing becomes part of the paid service itself.

Not All Haram Money Is the Same

The phrase haram money can refer to several different situations.

Stolen or embezzled property

This property still belongs to its rightful owner. It must be returned.

If it is asked: What do you say about the earnings received by a woman from fornication if she then repents? Must she return what she received to those who paid it, may she keep it, or should she give it in charity?
The answer is based upon a great principle of Islam. Whoever receives something that he was not lawfully entitled to receive and then wishes to free himself of it must return it to its owner if it was taken without the owner’s consent and the owner did not receive its proper exchange. If returning it to him is impossible, he should use it to settle a debt that he knows the owner owes. If that is impossible, he should return it to the owner’s heirs. If that is impossible, he should give it in charity on the owner’s behalf. If the owner of the right chooses the reward of that charity on the Day of Resurrection, it will belong to him. If he refuses and instead chooses to take from the good deeds of the person who received the property, he will take the equivalent of his wealth, and the reward of the charity will belong to the person who gave it. [Zad al-Maad fi Hady Khayr al-Ibad li-Ibn al-Qayyim 5/690]

A worker who has claimed payment for hours or services not provided must return the amount or obtain a genuine waiver. Donating it elsewhere is not a substitute while the owner can be identified.

Wealth prohibited because of how it was earned

This includes Riba income, gambling winnings, bribes, payment for prohibited services and wages for directly facilitating prohibited activity.

The original earner is sinful because of the transaction through which the wealth was acquired.

Mixed wealth

Mixed wealth contains both lawful and unlawful earnings where the particular units cannot be identified.

Mixed wealth, according to the scholars, may be used.

He then added:

But if you know that this particular money is the price of tobacco, the price of wine, stolen or usurped, then do not take it. [Fatwa Hukm al-Amwal al-Mukhtalatah min al-Halal wa al-Haram lil-Shaykh Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz, 2258]

This ruling does not permit the original earner to continue acquiring money unlawfully. It concerns another person dealing with someone whose wealth contains an unidentified mixture.

What about the family?

Specific stolen property cannot become lawful merely because it was given to a spouse or child. It still belongs to its rightful owner.

Regarding money prohibited because of the original earner’s transaction, the scholars differed when it reaches another person through maintenance, a gift or inheritance.

  • The Permanent Committee adopted a stricter position:
إِذَا كَانَتْ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ الْكَسْبَ الَّذِي يَأْتِي بِهِ إِلَى الْبَيْتِ حَرَامٌ فَلَا يَجُوزُ لَهَا أَنْ تَأْكُلَ مِنْهُ
If she knows that the earnings he brings into the home are unlawful, she may not eat from them. [Fatawa al-Lajnah al-Daimah lil-Buhuth al-Ilmiyyah wa al-Ifta, al-Majmuah al-Ula 21/168]

Another position, adopted by Sheikh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen رحمه الله, holds that wealth prohibited because of how it was earned carries sin upon the original earner, not necessarily upon someone who receives it through an independent lawful means.

What is prohibited because of how it was earned carries sin upon the earner, not upon a person who receives it from him through a permissible means. [Al-Qawl al-Mufeed ala Kitab al-Tawheed li-Ibn Uthaymin 2/352]

Young children and dependents are not treated like the person who knowingly chose the unlawful occupation.

  • The Permanent Committee stated:
أَمَّا الْأَوْلَادُ فَلَا ذَنْبَ لَهُمْ فِي ذَلِكَ، وَإِنَّمَا الذَّنْبُ عَلَى أَبِيهِمْ
As for the children, they bear no sin for that. The sin is upon their father. [Fatawa al-Lajnah al-Daimah lil-Buhuth al-Ilmiyyah wa al-Ifta, al-Majmuah al-Ula 26/332]

This does not make it permissible for the father to support them through unlawful income. It means that the moral responsibility for choosing the prohibited earning belongs to him, not to children without independent means.

How to Assess a Current or Prospective Job

Do not judge a job from its title alone. Two people may hold the same position while performing very different work. One accountant may prepare ordinary payroll records, while another formally processes interest-bearing contracts. One programmer may build educational software, while another develops a gambling platform.

Before accepting a role, or when reviewing a job you already hold, establish the following:

  • The employer’s principal activity.
  • The department in which you will work.
  • Your actual daily responsibilities.
  • The products, services and transactions you will handle.
  • Whether your work records, promotes, approves, transports or directly enables anything prohibited.
  • Whether the questionable element is central to the role or can be separated from it.
  • Whether payment is based upon time, availability, a completed result or personal performance.
  • Whether you possess the qualifications and competence required.
  • Whether Salah, family responsibilities and other religious obligations can be preserved.
  • Whether the salary is realistically sufficient for your household.
  • For a married woman, whether her husband has permitted the work according to the position discussed earlier, and whether a valid condition regarding employment was included in the marriage agreement.

A lawful task within a large company is not automatically prohibited merely because some unlawful activity occurs elsewhere in the organisation. The decisive issue is what the employee personally performs and how directly it contributes to the prohibited activity.

At the same time, a neutral job title cannot make direct involvement lawful. Business development may mean selling an ordinary service, or it may mean promoting interest-bearing finance. Content creation may involve educational material, or it may involve prohibited images and deceptive advertising.

When Lawful and Unlawful Duties Are Mixed

  • Sheikh Ibn Baz رحمه الله said:
ينظر في الأمر إن أمكنه أن يقتصر على الحلال ويميزه من الحرام يعمل بذلك، وإن كان لا يتمكن إلا من الحرام مع الحلال فعليه أن يستقيل ويبتعد
The matter should be examined. If he is able to restrict himself to what is lawful and separate it from what is unlawful, he may work in that manner. If he cannot avoid performing the unlawful work together with the lawful work, he must resign and stay away. [Fatwa Hukm al-Amal fi Majal Muharram lil-Hajah lil-Shaykh Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz, 5992]

The first step may therefore be to request different assignments, move to another department or remove the prohibited responsibility from the role. If this cannot be done and the employee must continue performing the unlawful work, he should prepare to leave.

A responsible transition may involve applying for other positions, retraining, reducing expenses or building another source of lawful income. This does not mean that financial hardship is insignificant. It means that temporary need should not quietly become a permanent excuse when lawful alternatives can reasonably be pursued.

If the ruling remains genuinely unclear after the duties have been examined, the worker should present the exact details to a qualified scholar. A vague question such as, Is working for this company halal? may not provide enough information. The scholar needs to know what the company does, what the employee does and how the employee’s work relates to the questionable activity.

  • The Prophet ﷺ said:
Whoever avoids doubtful matters has protected his religion and his honour. [Sahih Muslim 1599]

Wara‘ does not mean declaring every unfamiliar career haram. It means pausing when a genuine doubt remains, seeking knowledge and protecting oneself from falling into what is clearly prohibited.

The Career Title Is Only the Beginning

A beneficial profession can still produce unlawful income when it is practised dishonestly.

The electrician who invents faults, the tutor who completes a student’s assessed work, the developer who claims hours he did not work, the accountant who conceals fraud and the freelancer who sells copied material are all working in professions that may be permissible in origin. The problem lies in what they did to obtain the payment.

Conversely, a modest occupation may become rewarded worship when the service is lawful, the agreement is honoured, and the intention is righteous.

Earning and working become worship when accompanied by a righteous intention. [Al-Kasb wa al-Amal bi-Niyyah Salihah Ibadah lil-Shaykh Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz, al-Maddah al-Sawtiyyah Raqm 872]

A good intention does not make prohibited work lawful. The occupation, service and method of earning must first be permissible. The worker may then intend to remain independent, provide for his family, fulfil the rights of others and benefit the community.

  • The Prophet ﷺ said:
A dinar you spend in the path of Allah ﷻ, a dinar you spend to free a slave, a dinar you give in charity to a poor person and a dinar you spend upon your family: the greatest in reward is the dinar you spend upon your family. [Sahih Muslim 995]

Supporting one’s family is among the greatest forms of spending. That responsibility makes the search for halal provision more important, not less.

The strongest career is not necessarily the one with the highest salary or most impressive title. It is one in which the work is lawful, the employee is competent and honest, the income can meet genuine responsibilities, and obedience to Allah ﷻ and the rights of the family can be preserved.

O Allah ﷻ, suffice us with what You have made halal so that we have no need of what You have made haram, and enrich us through Your favour so that we have no need of anyone besides You.
