Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their souls and their wealth because for them is Paradise. Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Alameen, wa salatu wa salamu ala Sayyidina Muhammad wa ala alihi wa sahbihi ajma'een. All praise is due to Allah and may Allah's peace and blessings be upon his final messenger, Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam. We praise Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala as he deserves to be praised and praiseworthy.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala mentions in his book a group of people that have sacrificed their lives, that have sacrificed the things that they love for his sake subhanahu wa ta'ala. And he subhanahu wa ta'ala described them as people who have sold their selves for Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Wanting that which is with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
And today we're going to be looking at these verses, and try to analyze and look at how Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala describes them. Try to benefit from their characteristics and try to apply what they've applied so that we will have the same praise with the will of Allah.
The first verse is in Surah Al-Baqarah, where Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala after talking about the hypocrites, and how they made the claim that they love Allah and they love his messenger, yet they were hypocrites. They did it and their hearts were filled with disbelief. And once they left the messenger, once the people did not see them, they used to engage in all types of sins causing destruction on this world.
So Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala then described a group of people, not only do they obey Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, they have sold their selves for Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Allah azza wa jalla said in Surah Al-Baqarah, وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَشْرِي نَفْسَهُ بِتِغَاءَ مَرْضَاتِ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ رَؤُوفٌ بِالْعِبَادِ. Then a group of people, وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَشْرِي نَفْسَهُ who sold their selves for Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. سبحان الله يَشْرِي نَفْسَهُ He sold his self for Allah. He sacrifices everything for the sake of Allah.
وَمَن يَشْرِي نَفْسَهُ بِتِغَاءَ مَرْضَاتِ اللَّهِ Why? He sacrifices his self for what sake? For the sake of Allah. Seeking the approval of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. And that could be in many forms.
When they give Sadaqah, they sacrifice that amount for the sake of Allah. When they put their time in worship, they sacrifice their time for the sake of Allah. You know, when they're fasting, when they're doing something, worshipping Allah, whatever pain they get, whatever harm they come, it is sacrifice for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala praises them. He says, وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَشْرِي نَفْسَهُ بِتِغَاءَ مَرْضَاتِ اللَّهِ And then he said, وَاللَّهُ رَءُوفٌ بِالْعِبَادِ Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is kind to his servants. So these people will get something special more than anything, anyone else.
So they'll be treated special. Their deeds might be multiplied. And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala definitely appreciated that which they have done or have given up for his sake.
And what's interesting is that this verse specifically, there's a story behind it. Some scholars said that the cause of revelation was the story of Suhaib al-Rumi. Suhaib al-Rumi accepted Islam. He became a Muslim when he was in Mecca. The Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and the companions were in Medina. And he decided to migrate to Medina.
The people of Quraysh were not going to allow that. They said, you came to us a poor person. You had nothing. You engaged in business. And then suddenly you have built your wealth while you were here amongst us. We're not going to allow you to travel taking all your wealth with you.
So what did he say? What did he say? He said, fine, take my wealth. I don't care about this wealth. Take it. Just leave me be. Allow me to go and migrate to the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. So he did that. And they did that. He gave up his wealth. He gave up everything that he built, everything that he has gained through business. He gave it to them. And then he migrated to the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. He did this for Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
He didn't know of the surprise that a verse will be revealed because of him. He didn't know of the surprise that everyone will be happy with what he did. So he did what he did for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala not knowing of the blessings that he will get.
So once he reached Medina, he was surprised as Bekathir has mentioned. Ibn Abbas and Anas ibn Malik and Sa'id ibn Jubair and I remember Ikrimah. All of them mentioned this. This verse talks about Suhayb al-Rumi. So when he came to Medina, he found the companions waiting for him. They're like Rabih al-Bai' Rabih al-Bai' you have succeeded in your transaction.
You have succeeded in your transaction. He felt strange. Why are they telling me this? What did I do? And they're like the Prophet Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam has said to him, Rabih al-Bai' Rabih al-Bai' al-Suhayb You have succeeded in your transaction. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has mentioned you. That you're of the people that Allah azawajal has praised and said, وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَشْرِي نَفْسَهُ ابْتِغَاءَ مَرْضَاتِ اللَّهِ And of the people who sell themselves for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala seeking approval of Allah. And he was subhanallah.
There's a story in this that, you know, many of us could be doing good deeds. We don't know, you know, what Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala thinks of us. Maybe we have sacrificed something for the sake of Allah. And we have gained the approval of Allah. We have gained a lot of khair that we're not aware of. And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is very pleased with one of us. And he is totally not aware of that. He just did what he did for the sake of Allah. And he's humble. He doesn't know the reward that Allah azawajal is keeping for him. So never feel that you're not appreciated. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala appreciates your good deeds.
Just like Suhayb. He sacrificed for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. And Allah azawajal made, and nobody knows about this action. When he came to Medina, Allah revealed to the people in Medina, to the Prophet Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam, what Suhayb has done. And they were very pleased with him. And, you know, they said, you are lucky. We are happy for your transaction. And subhanallah.
So, be pleased with your acts of worship. And always have a good opinion of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. This is the first verse in Surah Al-Baqarah.
The next verse in Surah Fatir, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala describes good deeds. And the doers of these good deeds, how they are seeking a transaction with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said, Inna allatheena yatloona kitaaballahi wa aqamus salata wa anfakoo mimma razaqnaahum sirran wa alaniya What about them? Because we have the start of the verse saying, Inna. So, inna allatheena yatloona kitaaballahi. Wa aqamus salata. So they recite the book of Allah. Fine.
Wa aqamus salata. They establish prayer. Okay.
Wa anfakoo mimma razaqnaahum. They spend from that which we have given them. Mimma razaqnaahum. From that which we have given them. Not everything that we have given them. Some of what we have given them.
Wa anfakoo mimma razaqnaahum sirran wa alaniya What about them? Yarjoona tijaratan lantaboo. Seeking a profit from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala that will never end. Okay.
Seeking a profit from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Tijaratan lantaboo. That will never lose. A transaction that they know. Sincerely. They know. Certainly that. They will never lose out with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Yarjoona tijaratan lantaboo.
And then the next verse Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said Li wafiyahum ujoorahum Allah azawajal will give them their rewards wa yazeedahum min fadlih So He will even increase them from His bounty subhanahu wa ta'ala. So they did this for the sake of Allah. They wanted reward from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Allah azawajal has accepted this from them. Has accepted this transaction. He has given them the reward.
But dealing with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala you never get only that which you intended. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gives you more than that. Li wafiyahum ujoorahum He gave them their rewards wa yazeedahum min fadlih He even increased them in rewards from Him subhanahu wa ta'ala from His bounty wa yazeedahum min fadlih.
And then He ended the verse with two of His names that reflect the meaning of this verse. innahu ghafoorun shakoor Indeed He is the ghafoor and the shakoor. And ghafoor and shakoor, two of His names if you look at the form of these names is in the form of fa'ool which signifies strength. So His forgiveness is strong no matter how big your sins are His forgiveness is stronger and He subhanahu wa ta'ala said shakoor ghafoorun shakoor shakoor, a person, one who appreciates shakoor, one who appreciates but shakoor, it's way stronger not only will He give you, He will appreciate this but He will reward you much much much more than what you have given them.
So Allah azawajal mentions these two names that even if you guys are lacking even if you are sinners if you do something for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala He forgives your sins regardless of who you are and He gives you much more than what you have given Him subhanahu wa ta'ala.
Now the next verse is one of the most beautiful verses which is in Surat At-Tawbah which really makes you feel that this is a transaction between the servant and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in the sense that Allah azawajal said that these are the people who have sold their selves for Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala inna allaha ishtara minal mu'mineena anfusahum wa amwalahum indeed Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has bought, has purchased from the believers their souls, themselves, their souls anfusahum wa amwalahum and their wealth inna allaha ishtara minal mu'mineena anfusahum wa amwalahum what will they get? bi anna lahumul jannah they will get the paradise from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala bi anna lahumul jannah and here Al-Hassan Al-Basri said Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala indeed has purchased them and he has raised their worth because in reality we're replacing this limited life with paradise and in reality purchasing our souls in reality it is doing, obeying Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala you're living your life obeying Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala following the messenger Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam and Allah azawajal will replace you with another life in paradise a life which is complete you don't get tired you enjoy everything that Allah azawajal gives you and whatever Allah gives to you will be yours forever unlike this dunya and whatever Allah azawajal has given you in paradise you'll be able to enjoy it to the fullest unlike this dunya where you get tired you sleep, you might get sick once a person gets sick no matter what he has he cannot enjoy anything so that's the difference so Allah azawajal said bi-anna lahumul jannah and then he describes some of their actions and these are the people who fought and strived for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala yuqatiloona fee sabeelillahi fayaqutuloona wa yuqtaloon they fight for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala they kill and they get killed so either way they'll get the reward of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala yuqatiloona fee sabeelillahi fayaqutuloona wa yuqtaloon wa'dan alayhi haqqan fee attawrati wal injeel wal quran it is a promise a covenant given by Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala that is stated in the Tawrah the book of Musa, in the Injeel the book of Isa, and in the Quran the book of the Prophet Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam all of these books Allah azawajal has stated this and moreover Allah azawajal then says waman awfa bi ahdihi min Allah who is truer in his promise in his covenant, who is truer than Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala waman awfa bi ahdihi min Allah fastabshiru bi bay'ikum allathee bay'atun bi be happy, rejoice with this transaction rejoice with what Allah azawajal is going to be giving you fastabshiru bi bay'ikum allathee bay'atun bi wadhalika huwa alfawzul azeem and that indeed is the great success and then Allah azawajal, you know one might say this is for the people who fight for the sake of Allah because Allah azawajal said yuqatiluna fee sabeelillah fayaqtuluna wa yuqtaloon, but look at the next verse a person might ask who are these people, Allah azawajal then says in the next verse atta'iboon those who repent, atta'iboon al'abidoon those who worship Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala alhamidoon those who praise Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala assa'ihoon those who fast for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala arraki'oon assajidoon those who worship Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in prayer they prostrate for Allah they bow to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala al'amiroon bilma'roof wannahoon a'ni almunkar those who command what is good and forbid that which is evil al'amiroon bilma'roof wannahoon a'ni almunkar walhaafidoon li hudoodillah who walhaafidoon li hudoodillah those who observe the limits of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala walhaafidoon li hudoodillah and then at the end of the verse Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said wabashshir almu'min and give good tidings for the believers end of the day it is for the believers this is a transaction for the believers, selling themselves for Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and in return you are going to be getting paradise always remember this there is always a way back you are sacrificing yourself, you are sacrificing your free time and at the end of the day it is not something difficult you enjoy your life on being a Muslim you are living in this paradise of this world before experiencing the paradise of the hereafter the paradise of this world living, remembering Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and being happy with the word of Allah the Qur'an, rejoicing with the promises that Allah azawajal gives you in this Qur'an and of course then we move to the next verse where Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala mentions two promises two promises a promise from the shaytan from the worst of all liars and a promise from asdaqus sadiq the most truthful the promise of the worst of liars is the promise of the devil Allah azawajal says in surah al-baqarah ash-shaytanu ya'idukumu al-faqra wa ya'murukum bil-fahsha the devil, what does he promise you? shaytan ash-shaytanu ya'idukumu al-faqra he promises you what? poverty he scares you with poverty he scares you with the dunya you want to do something for the sake of Allah the shaytan comes to you and says don't spend for the sake of Allah you're going to get poor, you're going to lose your wealth this is the promise of the shaytan ash-shaytanu ya'idukumu al-faqra wa ya'murukum bil-fahsha he commands you with fahsha with immorality what does it mean in this context? not to spend for the sake of Allah spend in sins spend in things that are haram invest your money in that which is haram this is the promise of the shaytan ash-shaytanu ya'idukumu al-faqra wa ya'murukum bil-fahsha what about Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala wallahu ya'idukum maghfiratan minhu wa fadla Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala promises you forgiveness and a bounty from him subhanahu wa ta'ala wallahu ya'idukum maghfiratan minhu wa fadla wallahu wasi'un alim and then he mentions something of the greatest of all gifts yu'til hikmata man yasha he gives the wisdom to whomever he wills yu'til hikmata man yasha wa man yu'til hikma faqaqootia khayran kathira yu'til hikmata man he gives wisdom to whomever he wills and what's interesting is Ibn Abbas and many of the tabi'een when they explained this verse they said al-hikma the understanding of the Quran and Sunnah some of them said even the understanding the understanding of the Quran it's basically understanding your religion having beneficial knowledge this is something that no one can give you except Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala yu'til hikmata man yasha wa man yu'til hikmata faqaqootia khayran azeema and whoever Allah azawajal has given him wisdom then indeed Allah azawajal has given him something great wa ma yadhakkaru illa ulul albab no one will appreciate this and no one will understand the value of this blessing except those who have sane minds illa ulul albab illa ulul albab, those who think correctly who understand the value of this so Allah azawajal gives you something that which is special, sacrifice for him subhanahu wa ta'ala he will bless you and Allah azawajal as we mentioned wa man awfa bi ahdihi min Allah who is more truer in his promise than Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and remember that Allah azawajal will give you more than what you have given him, remember wa yazidahum min fadlih innahu ghafoorun shakoor he is forgiving and he is shakoor, he appreciates the good deeds, he multiplies your good deeds and he gives you more than what you have given him and remember the promise of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala that there is another promise the promise of the devil that might tell you don't do something for the akhira, think about your dunya, think about your future ignore him and look at the promise of Allah, Allah promises you forgiveness in this world and fadl, bounty from his bounty from him subhanahu wa ta'ala in the hereafter and also he will give you wisdom in this world which is the understanding of this religion which will give you subhanallah, which will make you live in the paradise of this world before the paradise of the hereafter and with this we will end hadha wallahu a'lam wa sallallahu nabiyyina Muhammad wa ala alihi wa sahbihi wa sallam.
