Discover the inspiring life of Umar ibn Al-Khattab رضي الله عنه, the second Caliph of Islam. Learn about his leadership, justice, strength & impact on Islamic history.

History has witnessed many great leaders, but few have shaped the course of a nation as profoundly as Umar ibn Al-Khattab

His name strikes with power, justice, and unwavering faith. He was a man who entered Islam as a fierce opponent and transformed into one of its greatest defenders. He was the sword of truth, the one whose very presence made Shaytan flee, and the leader under whom Islam rose to its golden age.

The Lineage and Early Life of Umar ibn Al-Khattab

Umar’s full name was Umar ibn Al-Khattab ibn Nufayl ibn Abdul Uzza ibn Riyah ibn Qurt ibn Razah ibn Adiyy ibn Ka’b ibn Lu’ayy. This lineage connects him to the Banu Adiyy clan of Quraysh.

His kunyah was Abu Hafs, and he carried the honorific title Al-Farooq, meaning "The One Who Distinguishes Between Right and Wrong."

Umar's mother was Hantama bint Hisham Al-Makhzumiyyah, making him the nephew of Abu Jahl, one of the most notorious enemies of Islam. This family connection is a striking contrast, as the nephew became one of Islam’s strongest defenders, while the uncle remained a firm opponent.

Umar’s Acceptance of Islam

Umar رضي الله عنه embraced Islam in the sixth year of the Prophethood around the age of 25. His conversion was a pivotal moment for the Muslim community. Before his Islam, Muslims practiced their faith in secrecy, fearing persecution from Quraysh. But when Umar declared his faith, Islam was no longer hidden.

The Prophet ﷺ himself had prayed:

اللهم أعز الإسلام بعمر بن الخطاب
"O Allah, strengthen Islam through Umar ibn Al-Khattab." (Narrated by multiple Sahaba, including Ibn Mas'ud, Aisha, and Abdullah ibn Umar) (Al-Sunnah li ibn abī āṣim:1299)

The supplication was answered, and Umar's Islam marked the beginning of a new era. Abdullah ibn Mas'ud رضي الله عنه said:

مازلنا أعزة منذ أسلم عمر
"We remained honored from the day Umar embraced Islam." (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 3684)

Likewise `Ikrimah, said:

"Islam remained in hiding until Umar embraced it." (Tareekh al-Islam:3/255)

Umar’s acceptance of Islam transformed the dynamics in Makkah.

Physical Appearance and Strength

Umar was known for his imposing stature and powerful presence. His son, Abdullah ibn Umar, described him:

كان أبي أبيض تعلوه حمرة طويلًا
"My father was white-skinned with a reddish hue, and he was very tall." (Tabaqaat Ibn Sa'd 3/247)

Abu Raja' Al-Ataridi said:

كان طويلًا جسيمًا شديد الحمرة
"Umar was tall, well-built, and had a strong reddish complexion." (Tārīkh Dimashq: 44/17)

The Prophet ﷺ said about him:

إِنِّي لَأَنظُرُ إِلَىٰ شَيَاطِينِ وَالْإِنسِ الْجِنِّ قَدْ فَرُّوا مِنْ عُمَرَ
"I see the devils from among the jinn and men running away from Umar."(Sunan Al-Tirmidhi: 3691)

Umar’s Status in Islam

The Prophet ﷺ praised Umar in numerous ways. He once said:

"Follow those who come after me: Abu Bakr and Umar." (Tirmidhi: 3662)

Even the Shaytan feared Umar. The Prophet ﷺ said:

"No Shaytan ever encounters you on a path except that he takes another path." (Bukhari: 3294)

Umar رضي الله عنه was also a man whose opinions aligned with divine revelation. He once said:

"I agreed with my Lord on three matters." (Bukhārī: 402)

These were:

  1. The Maqam of Ibrahim – He suggested it be made a place of prayer, and Allah revealed: "And take the Maqam of Ibrahim as a place of prayer." (Surah Al-Baqarah: 125)
  2. Hijab for the Wives of the Prophet ﷺ – He advised the Prophet ﷺ to order his wives to observe Hijab, and Allah revealed: "O Prophet, tell your wives and daughters and the believing women to draw their outer garments over themselves." (Surah Al-Ahzab: 59)
  3. The Wives of the Prophet ﷺ – When some of them troubled the Prophet ﷺ, Umar suggested they be admonished, and Allah revealed: "Perhaps his Lord, if he divorces you, will replace you with better wives." (Surah At-Tahrim: 5)

The Leadership of Umar ibn Al-Khattab

Umar رضي الله عنه became the second Caliph after the death of Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه. His rule lasted ten years, during which Islam expanded beyond the Arabian Peninsula, reaching Persia, Syria, and Egypt.

Despite ruling over vast lands, his humility remained unmatched. His governance was marked by justice, simplicity, and devotion. Once, his children urged him to eat better food to maintain his health, to which he replied:

تركت صاحبي على جادة فإن تركت جادتهما لم أدركهما في المنزل
"I left my two companions (the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr) on a path, and if I deviate from it, I won’t reach them in the Hereafter." (Al-Sunan al-Kubrā: 18/145)

His Death

Umar رضي الله عنه had always wished for martyrdom. He once made dua:

اللهم ارزقني شهادة في سبيلك، واجعل موتي في بلد رسولك
"O Allah, grant me martyrdom in Your cause and let my death be in the city of Your Messenger." (Bukhārī: 1890)

And indeed, his wish was granted.

During Fajr prayer, a Persian slave named Abu Lu’lu’ah Al-Majusi stabbed Umar with a poisoned dagger. He struck him multiple times, causing fatal wounds. As he lay dying, his concern was not for himself, but for the Ummah.

He asked his son Abdullah to request permission from Aisha رضي الله عنها to be buried beside the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه. Aisha agreed, and Umar was buried next to his most beloved companions.
