Something isn't right. And you know it.
Maybe it's an illness the doctors can't explain. A marriage falling apart for no clear reason. A heaviness in your home that won't lift. A series of accidents that doesn't end no matter what you do.
You've tried everything. Nothing has worked. And somewhere in the back of your mind, a thought keeps returning:
Could this be something else entirely?
That thought is worth taking seriously.
Because the evil eye is real. Sihr (magic) is real. And Allah - the One who is Aware of all that happens - has given us the cure.
It's in the Qur'an. It's in the authentic Sunnah. And you don't need a diagnosis or anything special to begin. You just need to start - the right way.
This article walks you through a simple 7-day programme rooted entirely in the Qur'an and Sunnah.
Give it 15 minutes. By the end, you'll know exactly what to do.
The Two Mistakes Most Muslims Make
Before we get into the method of Ruqyah - which basically means seeking a cure from an affliction using the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah - let's talk about what holds most people back.
The first mistake is turning to Allah as a last resort.
When something goes wrong, the first instinct is the pharmacy or the doctor's clinic — and there's nothing wrong with either of those. But a person should know and admit an extremely critical fact:
Allah is the One who cures.
The Qur'an is a shifa. Yet somehow, we treat it like a backup plan.
The second mistake is waiting for a diagnosis before starting Ruqyah.
People delay treatment because they want to know first - is it the evil eye? Sihr (magic)? Jinn possession? Waswas? So they go from one person to another, asking what the problem is, while the treatment keeps getting pushed further and further away. But here's the thing:
Ruqyah is not built on guessing the Unseen. It is built on turning to Allah.
If you feel afflicted, possessed, unwell, or simply in need of treatment, you do not need a diagnosis to begin. You need to begin with what Allah has made a means of cure.
That is exactly what this programme offers.
What is the 7-Day Ruqyah Programme?
The 7-Day Ruqyah Programme is an effective method of treatment taught by Ustadh Muhammad Tim Humble. It is the programme of his teacher, Sheikh 'Adil al-Muqbil, who named it "Al-Ashfiyah" - meaning "The Cures."
This method uses cures from the Qur'an and Sunnah in a simple, systematic way.
The individual elements, such as recitation of the Qur'an, olive oil, honey, and black seed, are all known from the Qur'an and Sunnah. The specific arrangement of the programme is a matter of Ijtihad, like a prescription: the ingredients are authentic, and the way they are arranged is based on the experience and judgement of a scholar in the field.
And by the Grace of Allah, lots of people have found relief through this programme.
Before You Begin: Get This Right in Your Heart
This is the most important part of the article. Read it carefully.
Ruqyah does not cure by itself.
The person reciting does not cure. Their voice does not cure. Their righteousness does not cure. Even their Iman, as great as that may be, is not independent in bringing cure.
Allah alone cures. Ruqyah is only a means. Having this belief is vital.
- Allah says:
وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ مَا هُوَ شِفَاءٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
"And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers…" [Surah Al-Isra 17:82]
The believer takes the means, but the heart stays attached to the One who created the means.
This is why the scholars placed conditions on Ruqyah. Ibn Hajar رحمه الله mentioned that the scholars agreed on its permissibility when three conditions are met:
- It must be done with the Speech of Allah, His Names and Attributes, or words whose meaning is known
- It must be in Arabic, or in words whose meaning is understood
- The person must believe that Ruqyah does not have an effect by itself. Rather, the effect, relief and cure come only and only from Allah
[Ibn Hajar, Fath Al-Bari, Kitab At-Tibb, Bab Ar-Ruqa bil-Qur'an wal-Mu'awwidhat, 10/195]
Why This Programme is Easier Than the Full Ruqyah
In a full Ruqyah session, the reciter needs to be present, recite directly over the person, and manage symptoms as they appear. That has its place and importance, and Ustadh Muhammad Tim Humble discusses it in depth in his complete Ruqyah course on AMAU Academy.
But this programme is different. The recitation and the application are separated.
A person can recite over the water and olive oil, and the afflicted person uses them later. It can be in a different room, a different city, even days or weeks later.
This makes it accessible for someone who:
- Is too weak to recite for themselves
- Struggles with fear when trying to begin
- Doesn't know how to recite well
- Finds that symptoms worsen when they try to start
That said, it is always better for the afflicted person to recite for themselves if they are able. A person's own need, humility, desperation, and turning to Allah can be a major factor in the effectiveness of Ruqyah.
If needed, the recitation and application can also happen at the same time. The method is flexible.
Ingredients You Will Need
The following are the ingredients upon which the Qur’an is recited:
1. Water
For water, Zamzam is preferred.
- The Prophet ﷺ said:
مَاءُ زَمْزَمَ لِمَا شُرِبَ لَهُ
"The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for." [Sunan Ibn Majah 3062]
If Zamzam isn't available, don't delay. Use normal water. Prepare around 1.5 litres per two days. That is approximately 6 litres total for the full seven days.
2. Olive Oil
Good quality is preferred.
- The Prophet ﷺ said:
اِئْتَدِمُوا بِالزَّيْتِ وَادَّهِنُوا بِهِ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ شَجَرَةٍ مُبَارَكَةٍ
"Season your food with olive oil and anoint yourselves with it, for it comes from a blessed tree." [Sunan Ibn Majah 3319]
Supermarket olive oil is absolutely fine if that's what's available.
The following are some ingredients used alongside, but not recited upon:
3. Black Seed
It is also known as Habbat as-Sawda, Habbat al-Barakah, black cumin, or Kalonji.
- The Prophet ﷺ said:
إِنَّ هَذِهِ الْحَبَّةَ السَّوْدَاءَ شِفَاءٌ مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ إِلاَّ مِنَ السَّامِ
"This black seed is healing for every disease except As-Saam." [Sahih Al-Bukhari 5687]
He ﷺ was asked, "What is As-Saam?" He ﷺ said, "Death."
4. Raw Honey
- Allah says in the Qur'an:
يَخْرُجُ مِن بُطُونِهَا شَرَابٌ مُّخْتَلِفٌ أَلْوَانُهُ فِيهِ شِفَاءٌ لِّلنَّاسِ
"There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colours, in which there is healing for people." [Surah An-Nahl 16:69]
On honey quality: the secret is how much you trust the beekeeper or seller. If you know a reliable source, use it. If not, use what is available, and begin.
What to Recite and How
The recitation is done over both the water and the olive oil. Recite properly over each one; you can alternate between them. While reciting over one, there is no issue with lightly blowing over both, but each should receive its own recitation.
Here is the full recitation:
Note: Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas are Al-Mu'awwidhatayn. Together with Surah Al-Ikhlas, they are the three "Qul" Surahs.
The Daily Routine (Day by Day)
The programme begins at night.
Every Night
Apply a small amount of the recited olive oil to your body like a moisturising cream. Wipe as much of the body as you comfortably can. The more areas covered, the better, but missing a spot is not a disaster. There is no need for obsessive worry. This is treatment, not a ritual built on hardship.
Once you have applied the oil, go to sleep.
Every Morning
In the morning, take a shower to wash off the oil.
When washing off the oil in the shower, take one cup of the recited water and pour it over the back of the head. The water should be at room temperature. Do not heat it.
There is no issue if the water goes down the drain. It is water that has been recited upon; it is not the Mushaf.
Three Times During the Day
Drink three cups from the bottle each day, at whatever time is easiest for you.
Before each cup, add:
- 2 tablespoons of honey
- 7 black seeds
Stir well, especially since the water is at room temperature.
For those with diabetes: You do not have to add honey. You may reduce the amount if you can tolerate a little. If you strongly dislike the taste, you may reduce it too. The point is to use the cure in a way you can actually continue.
Repeat this every night and morning for the full seven days.
How Long Should You Continue?
Seven days is the programme, but it is not a hard limit.
The programme can be done for longer. It can be repeated. It can be discontinuous: a person may do seven days, stop for a few days, then continue again. The need, severity of symptoms, and ability to commit all matter.
On the olive oil: Sheikh 'Adil al-Muqbil recommends using it for three days. Ustadh Tim Humble prefers using both the olive oil and water throughout all seven days. This is an area of Ijtihad and practical preference. Do what is easy, consistent, and suitable for your situation.
What to Expect
Most of the time, nothing dramatic.
A person may not shake. They may not feel anything strange. No obvious side effect may appear.
That does not mean the programme isn't working.
Ruqyah is not theatre. Cure does not have to arrive with a loud reaction. Often, the person gets better gradually. Symptoms reduce. The mind becomes clearer. Worship becomes easier. The tension is released, and heaviness lifts quietly, over time.
Sometimes, symptoms do appear.
Shaking, nausea, tiredness, fear, anger - these can happen. It may be after the first sip. It may be on the third or fourth day. It may be later. It may not happen visibly at all. People are different, and afflictions are different.
Based on experience, symptoms may show around the third or fourth day for some sisters, but this is not a rule. Nobody should treat it as a fixed sign.
The instruction is simple: continue, seek Allah's help, and do not panic.
If symptoms appear, do not be scared!
Fear is one of the biggest weapons Shaytan uses.
- Allah says:
That is only Shaytan who frightens his allies. So do not fear them, but fear Me, if you are believers. [Surah Al-Imran 3:175]
If something happens during Ruqyah, do not lose yourself. Here is what to do:
- Stay calm
- Protect the patient (Make the area safe, remove objects they may hit, ensure they cannot fall or hurt themselves or others.)
- Do not negotiate with the Jinn (Do not get pulled into long conversations, do not ask for detailed stories, do not build your understanding of the unseen from what they say. Don't believe anything they say.)
- Command with good and forbid evil
And don't be scared of anything or anyone except Allah.
- Allah says:
You are the best nation produced for mankind. You enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and believe in Allah… [Surah Al-Imran 3:110]
If the case requires more direct treatment, a person may move to the full Ruqyah programme. Ustadh Tim Humble's Ruqyah course on the AMAU Academy covers this in detail.
Should You Ask Someone Else to Do Ruqyah?
There are two hadiths that people sometimes struggle to reconcile.
The first encourages helping others:
- "Whoever among you is able to benefit his brother, let him do so." [Sahih Muslim 2199a]
The second describes the seventy thousand who will enter Jannah without account as those who:
- "...do not ask for Ruqyah, do not believe in omens, do not use cautery, and upon their Lord they rely." [Sahih Al-Bukhari 5705]
These hadiths do not contradict each other.
Asking for Ruqyah is not haram. But there is a higher station for the one who does not ask, because of the perfection of their reliance upon Allah. It's similar to Du'a: it is permissible to ask someone righteous to make du'a for you, but turning to Allah yourself is better.
So:
- Best: Perform Ruqyah upon yourself
- Good: Someone offers to help without being asked
- Permissible: Asking for help when you cannot do it yourself and the affliction is causing harm
When Asking for Ruqyah Becomes Necessary
If an affliction is blocking a person from fulfilling their obligations - prayer, fasting, family duties - the matter becomes serious.
- A principle in Fiqh says:
ما لا يتم الواجب إلا به فهو واجب
"Whatever is necessary for the fulfilment of an obligation becomes obligatory."
If asking for Ruqyah is what it takes to fulfil what Allah has made obligatory, then it becomes obligatory to that extent.
But choose carefully!
Going to the wrong person for Ruqyah can destroy a person's Dunya and Akhirah. Some people mix truth with falsehood. Some engage in practices that are Bid’ah or sometimes major Shirk. Some deal with the Jinn. Some turn Ruqyah into business, control, or superstition.
So learn the basics, and choose the right person.
What Increases the Effectiveness of Ruqyah?
Ruqyah is not about quantity alone. Some people recite for months without the results they hoped for. The issue is often not the number of hours, it is the state of the heart, the quality of recitation, the weakness of certainty, or the lack of change in one's life.
A person doing Ruqyah should try to cultivate:
- Correct Aqeedah (belief)
- Knowledge of Tawheed and Sunnah
- Taqwa of Allah
- Istighfar
- Du'a
- Avoiding sins
- Holding firmly to the Sunnah
- Pondering over the meanings of what is being recited
- Reflecting on the Names and Attributes of Allah
The closer a person is to Allah in belief, worship, obedience, and reliance, the stronger the means become, by His permission.
The Qur'an is shifa, but the heart should not recite it like empty sounds. Listen. Think. Humble yourself. Remember that every cure is in Allah's Hand.
Ruqyah is Treatment, Not Prevention
This is worth saying clearly.
Ruqyah is a treatment. Prevention is the daily protection Allah has legislated: morning and evening adhkar, adhkar after Salah, adhkar before sleep, recitation of Qur'an, du'a, keeping away from sins, and living upon Tawheed and the Sunnah.
A person should not abandon the daily adhkar, then expect a Ruqyah programme to carry the weight of what they neglect every morning and evening.
Treatment matters. Prevention matters too.
And none of this means ignoring medical treatment when it is needed. A believer takes lawful means while keeping the heart attached to Allah.
You Do Not Need a Diagnosis to Begin
One last thing. And this is important.
You do not need to know whether the issue is evil eye, Sihr, Jinn, Waswas, or something else. There is no evidence that a diagnosis is required before beginning.
If you feel afflicted, just begin performing Ruqyah.
There is no wrong time to start.
And when symptoms reduce, don't rush to stop. Continue until the symptoms are gone. Even after that, there is no harm in doing more, as long as you don't attach invented numbers or restrictions as though they are legislated.
A Final Word
Take the means. Turn to Allah. Keep your heart attached to Him.
Use the oil, the water, the honey, and the black seed. Recite the Qur'an and seek cure through what Allah has revealed.
But never let your heart stop at the means.
These cures only benefit because Allah allows them to benefit. They only heal because Allah places healing in them. The one reciting does not cure. The programme does not cure by itself. The means do not cure independently.
Only Allah cures.
And when Allah grants cure to His servant, no affliction can stand in its way.
For those who want to go deeper - into different Ruqyah programmes, how to deal with Sihr, evil eye, Jinn-related afflictions, symptoms, safety, and full treatment plans - Ustadh Muhammad Tim Humble's Ruqyah course on AMAU Academy covers all of this in detail.
But do not let the desire to know everything stop you from acting upon what you already know.
